Monk Ceremony in Thai Buddhist Wedding Tradition

One of the most sacred elements of a Thai Buddhist wedding is the Monk Ceremony, typically held in the early morning. This ceremony is a way to seek blessings for the couple’s future and is deeply rooted in Buddhist practices. Usually they will choose a good time like 6:09 or 7:09 AM according to their beliefs.

Essential Items for the Monk Ceremony

  • Buddha Altar: The altar is the spiritual centerpiece of the ceremony, in Thai they call it Toh Moo Bucha. It should be adorned with a Buddha statue, symbolizing the presence of Buddha, along with fresh flowers placed in small vases to honor the sanctity of the occasion. Lighting candles and incense sticks signify enlightenment and the dispelling of ignorance, while the tray for incense ashes ensures cleanliness and respect.

  • Offerings: Offerings, play a crucial role in the Monk Ceremony. You should prepare food and water for the monks, symbolizing the nourishment they provide through their teachings. The “Sangkatan” is a traditional offering package that includes daily necessities such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other items. The donation envelope, typically filled with money, is given to support the monks and the temple, reflecting the virtue of generosity.

  • Ritual Items: The holy water bowl and holy water sprinker are used in the blessing rituals, symbolizing purity, while the pure gold paper represents the highest form of merit-making. Sacred threads are tied around the wrists of the couple, symbolizing protection and connection.

  • Seating Area: The seating area for the monks should be carefully arranged with mats or carpets, and cushions to ensure comfort. Ceremonial fans are provided for the monks, and glasses of water also candy are placed nearby.

  • Additional Items: Ensure you have a container for the holy water and a monk’s alms bowl, which are both integral to the rituals. Each of these items carries profound significance, representing the couple’s commitment to living a life in accordance with Buddhist principles.

Preparing for the Khanmak Ceremony

The Khan Mak Ceremony is one of the most visually captivating parts of a Thai Buddhist wedding. This traditional procession involves the groom and his family bringing symbolic offerings to the bride’s family, signifying their respect and intention to provide for her. Khan Mak itself is divided into 2 types, Khan Mak Ek and Khan Mak Tho. These are the two types of trays or offerings that the groom’s family and friends bring to the bride’s house.

Khan Mak Ek (Main Offering)

The main offering which consists of symbolic items such as The banana and sugarcane trees represent fertility and prosperity, while the dowry money and jewelry reflects the groom’s ability to care for his bride. Rose petals are scattered along the path to bless the couple’s journey. There is also Money bags, an engagement ring, white umbrellas, and a small wedding bouquet are also included, each symbolizing various aspects of wealth, protection, and love.

The white umbrella is carried by a friend of the groom who walks beside him, as the groom holds the Khan Mak Tray, and the bouquet is for the bride.

The money bags are cloths used to wrap the sinsod (Dowry) after it has been counted and handed over to the bride’s family.”

The engagement ring is used during the engagement ceremony after the Khan Mak offering is completed.

Khan Mak Tho (Secondary Offering)

This is the secondary offering, featuring an array of delicious foods, including fruits and traditional Thai sweets like khanom thong yip, khanom thong yod, and khanom med kanoon. Each item carries symbolic meaning, often representing wishes for prosperity, fertility, and happiness in the marriage. Additionally, the offering includes pieces of pork, a whole chicken, alcoholic beverages, and other delightful treats.

In addition, the groom should prepare envelopes filled with money for the Pratu Ngen Pratu Thong tradition or often called a door game. This fun custom involves the bride’s attendants blocking the groom’s path with a decorative chain, symbolizing the challenges he must overcome to win his bride. The groom must offer these envelopes to pass, and sometimes he is asked playful questions that can add humor to the ceremony.

Preparing for the Water Pouring Ceremony

The Water Pouring Ceremony (Phithi Rod Nam Sang) is a deeply symbolic ritual that involves the couple receiving blessings from their guests. This ceremony is often conducted under a beautifully decorated arch or backdrop, and it requires a specific set of items that are integral to its success.

Garlands (Phuang Malay)

Fresh flower garlands are an essential part of the Water Pouring Ceremony. These garlands, often made from jasmine, marigolds, crown flower, and roses,  are placed around the couple’s necks, symbolizing their unity and the blessings bestowed upon them.

Blessing Strings (Day Mongkol)

Sacred blessing strings are tied around the couple’s wrists by the monks, symbolizing protection and good fortune. This act also signifies the binding of the couple’s spirits, uniting them in marriage.

Bai Sri

Bai Sri is a traditional decoration made from banana leaves and flowers, symbolizing the purity and sanctity of the ceremony. It is often used to decorate the altar or the area where the water pouring takes place.

In modern times, the Bai Sri used in Thai weddings no longer has to be made from traditional materials like banana leaves and fresh flowers. While these natural elements may still be preferred in rural areas, where traditions and beliefs remain strong, the practice has evolved in urban settings. Nowadays, Bai Sri is often crafted using artificial materials, allowing it to match the wedding’s color scheme and theme. This shift reflects the blend of tradition and contemporary aesthetics, making the ceremony more personalized and adaptable to modern tastes.

Holy Water

Holy water, which is always used in a Thai Buddhist wedding ceremony, is blessed by monks during the Phithi Song ceremony, infusing it with spiritual power. The water is then poured over the couple’s hands by their guests, who offer their blessings for a prosperous and happy marriage.
